Enjoy a Rich-Twinn Octagon House tour at 145 Main St. Akron.
Self-guided tours are offered the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every
month, March-November from 1:00pm—3:00pm. Watch for special
hours during the 4th of July, the month of December and possibly
other times during the year. You may also call 542-7022 for
contact information regarding a guided tour.

The Knight-Sutton Museum opens its doors to another great
exhibit, Rag Tops, Sock Hops, and Rock & Roll: The Nifty
Fifties. The exhibit holds displays that celebrate the 50s
decade including global, national and local history; the
entertainment industry; and the lifestyle of the era. Regular
hours are: every Wednesday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm; the first
Sunday of every month from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm; other days and
times can be arranged by calling museum director, Marybeth
Whiting, at 542-7022

opening for this exhibit: Thursday, April 8 from 6:30 pm to 9:00

special evening
for our Newstead Historical Society Members and their guests!
This
program will be held from
7:00– 9:00pm at the Knight-Sutton Museum, 123 Main St. Akron and
will be a sneak peak of the 2010 exhibit which will feature
information on the 1950’s era. Take a “stroll” back in time to
what the 50’s were like in Akron and in the nation. The place
will be ‘rockin’!” Regular hours will begin on Wednesday, April
14th and include: the first Sunday of every month
from 1:00pm-3:00pm and every
Wednesday from 10:00am-1:00pm through November; or any time by

“The Impact of the 1940’s”
Perhaps the 1950’s felt ‘safe’ for Americans because of what
happened during the 40’s. A favorite presenter, Greg Kinal, is
back with a heartfelt look at the 1940’s. You won’t want to miss
this emotion-filled presentation of one of our most dramatic yet
patriotic times in American history.

View photos of and artifacts from our area one-room school
houses. Anyone who attended a rural school house is encouraged
to share their stories, memories and any mementos from their
schools.

July 4 – “Annual 4th of July Festivities”
The festivities of the day include our Newstead Historical Society
annual Pie Sale; tours of both The Rich-Twinn Octagon House
and the Knight-Sutton Museum; gift shop specials; plus our
annual Amish quilt raffle ticket sale. These activities and more
are what makes ‘coming back to Akron’ in the summer so special!

A tour of
some of the most beautiful gardens in our local area. A ‘rain or
shine’ event that begins in our own gardens of the Rich-Twinn

August 10 “The Erie Canal in 3-D”
*Please
note day/date: Lockmaster, Mr. David MacDonald will be our guide
as we take a virtual trip down the Erie Canal while viewing a
special film. Don’t miss this fun-filled evening that will
provide a new way to learn about the lock system and history of
the canal. So pass the popcorn and don’t worry, the 3-D glasses
will be provided!!
September
9th - “A Contrast of POW Experiences”
Local author
and Town of Porter Historian, Susan Dietz from Youngstown, NY
has extensively researched the history of Fort Niagara which was
used as a POW camp during the war. Her work provides a
fascinating opportunity to contrast the Fort Niagara experience
against the gut-wrenching European experience.

Dinner “ & 2011 Slate of Officers Announcement
Held @ the
American Legion, 9 Eckerson Ave., a 6:00 pm start includes a bit
of NHS business and then a turkey dinner with homemade stuffing,
mashed potatoes, vegetables, pies and more! We have a great
Akron program planned for after dinner: Cummings Cement and
Family History. Rescheduled for this year, this program features
one of the many cement companies that made Akron, NY known for
its cement manufacturing across the country in the late 1800’s
and many interesting facts & history about the Cummings family.

NHS Membership Meeting Thursday, November 11th
Our annual
membership meeting and election begins at 7:30pm with “Our
Akron/Newstead Veterans” program quickly following.
This will be a special program for Veteran’s Day which will
highlight and honor our local veteran’s. Please watch for
details.

December 9th “Christmas Potluck Gathering and Program”
Beginning at 6:00pm. This is always a pleasant evening of good food,
fun and friendship. Please bring a dish to pass. Carved ham,
table service and your beverage will be provided. Evening
includes installation of officers and collector Ken McPherson
from Medina, who will share a portion of his Santa Claus
mementos. Ken will also discuss the life of Charles W. Howard,
his Santa Claus school and Christmas Park.
